Line Arrays vs Point Source Speakers
When planning an outdoor event, the single biggest decision for your sound system is whether to use a line array or point source speakers. For events over 200 people, line arrays are almost always the right choice. Here is why.
A point source speaker projects sound in a cone shape. Volume drops off quickly as you move away from the speaker. The front row gets blasted while the back rows struggle to hear. They work fine for small gatherings, DJ setups, and indoor rooms under 200 people.
A line array uses multiple speaker elements stacked vertically. The sound projects in a controlled pattern that maintains consistent volume across a much larger distance. The audience in row 50 hears nearly the same volume as row 5. This is why every major concert, festival, and large outdoor event uses line arrays.
Sizing Your Line Array
Choosing the right line array depends on three factors: crowd size, venue dimensions, and event type.
100 to 500 people: A compact line array like the JBL SRX906 (4 to 6 boxes per side) delivers excellent coverage for mid-size outdoor events, corporate gatherings, and wedding receptions. Pair with SRX918 subwoofers for full-range sound.
500 to 2,000 people: Step up to the JBL SRX910 or VTX series. More boxes per side (6 to 8) provide the throw needed for larger venues. Additional subwoofers ensure low-end impact across the entire audience area.
2,000+ people: Large-format VTX arrays with 8 to 12 boxes per side, flown from truss or stacked on ground frames. Multiple subwoofer arrays for even bass distribution. This is festival and arena-level production.
Weather Considerations for Outdoor Events
Outdoor sound comes with unique challenges:
Wind: Wind carries sound away from the audience. Position your line arrays downwind when possible, and budget extra headroom in your system design.
Rain: Professional line arrays like JBL SRX have weather-rated components, but you still need covered rigging and protected amplifier racks. Always have tarps and covers ready.
Temperature: Cold weather affects battery-powered equipment and can impact speaker performance. Hot weather requires shade for electronics and adequate ventilation for amplifiers.
Noise ordinances: Many outdoor venues in NJ and PA have decibel limits and curfews. A properly aimed line array actually helps with this — you can focus sound on the audience area and reduce spillover to neighboring properties.
What is Included with a Professional Rental
When you rent a line array system from a professional AV company, expect these services included:
- Delivery and load-in to your venue
- Professional rigging or ground stacking
- System tuning and optimization for your specific venue
- On-site sound engineer during your event
- Teardown and load-out after the event
Do not try to set up a line array yourself. These systems require professional rigging knowledge, system tuning expertise, and real-time mixing during the event.
