JBL SRX vs L-Acoustics Line Array Rental: What the Spec Sheet Doesn't Tell You

If you are renting line array gear for an event, you have probably seen both JBL SRX and L-Acoustics Kara/K2 quoted. Both are concert-grade. Both will fill a room with clean sound. Both come from reputable manufacturers. The price is different. The weight is different. The rigging is different. The coverage pattern is different. And the people who will actually run the show have strong opinions.

Here is a working comparison from a production company that owns both — JBL SRX 910LA in our primary rental fleet, L-Acoustics Kara available for larger shows and rider-sensitive events.

What we stock and why

JBL SRX 910LA is our daily driver. 12 boxes in inventory, plus SRX 928S subwoofers. The reason is simple: it is the best value in concert-grade line array under $30K per box retail. For 90% of the events we do — corporate keynotes, weddings, galas, festivals under 2,000 people — the SRX 910LA delivers the same result a Kara or K2 delivers, at half the rental rate to the planner.

L-Acoustics Kara and K2 are in our network through sub-rental for shows that specifically need them — usually because an artist's technical rider requires it, or because the venue's spec calls for it. We do not own Kara or K2 because the utilization does not justify the capital cost for our booking mix.

Both are legitimate choices. Here is how they actually compare in the field.

The raw spec difference is real but smaller than the price difference suggests. Both will hit 138 to 139 dB peak. Both have adjustable vertical coverage. The biggest practical difference is weight and amp requirements.

What the spec sheet does not tell you

1. Weight and rigging speed

JBL SRX 910LA is 74 lbs per box. A 1-person crew can fly an array of 4 to 6 boxes without a chain motor in most cases. For ground-stacked setups, this is the difference between a 30-minute load-in and a 90-minute load-in.

L-Acoustics Kara is 82 lbs per box — only 8 lbs heavier, but it requires a 2-person crew for any flown array over 4 boxes. L-Acoustics K2 is 110 lbs per box. K2 almost always requires a chain motor and a rigging supervisor.

If your venue has weight limits, low ceilings, or limited rigging points, JBL SRX is significantly easier to deploy. Most hotels, conference centers, and outdoor stages we work in are SRX-friendly.

2. Amp ecosystem

JBL SRX has built-in amplification (bi-amped, 1,100W continuous per box). You do not need separate amp racks. This saves 2 to 4 amp rack positions in your truck, 30 to 60 minutes on load-in, and roughly $400/day in rental cost per amp rack you would otherwise need.

L-Acoustics Kara and K2 require LA8 or LA12X amplified controllers. The LA12X is roughly $8,000 new, and you need one per array. Sub-rental on a Kara show includes the amps as part of the box rate, but you are still paying for them.

For an event with 2 line arrays of 6 boxes, the JBL SRX system needs no separate amps. The L-Acoustics system needs 2 LA12X controllers. That is a 4-space amp rack you are not using.

3. Coverage pattern

All three have adjustable vertical coverage. The horizontal coverage differs:

• SRX 910LA: 90° H × 10° V (adjustable)
• Kara: 100° H × 10° V (adjustable)
• K2: 90° H × 10° V (adjustable)

Kara's 100° horizontal coverage is wider. For short-throw applications (audience within 30 feet of the array), Kara covers more area with fewer boxes. For long-throw (audience 60 to 150 feet away), the 90° SRX and K2 are both tighter, which means more SPL on the back of the room.

Most hotel ballrooms and conference spaces are short-throw. Kara has a marginal advantage there. For outdoor festivals and arena shows, SRX and K2 are both fine.

4. Sound character

This is the subjective part, but it matters. Both JBL SRX and L-Acoustics are clean, accurate, and musical. The differences:

• JBL SRX 910LA: slightly forward in the upper mids, very present on vocals, cuts through a noisy room well. The box is voiced for live vocals in a hotel ballroom or outdoor stage.
• L-Acoustics Kara: more neutral, slightly smoother on the high end. Better for acoustic content, classical, or extended listening. The box is voiced for music venues and broadcast.
• L-Acoustics K2: very smooth, very flat, exceptional headroom. This is the box you want for a band whose rider says “no compression, no EQ, just send it.”

For a corporate keynote or awards dinner, the SRX 910LA is the right tool. For a 3-hour live concert with a technical rider, K2 is the right tool. Most events fall in the middle, and either works.

5. Cost reality for the planner

For a 6-box-per-side line array rig (12 boxes total), 3-day event:

• SRX 910LA: 12 × $225 = $2,700
• Kara (sub-rental): 12 × $475 = $5,700
• K2 (sub-rental): 12 × $800 = $9,600

That is the cost difference. It is not a small difference. For a 300-person corporate conference, the planner is paying $2,700 vs $5,700 vs $9,600 for the same result, in most cases.

When to rent L-Acoustics anyway

There are three reasons to rent Kara or K2 even at 2 to 3× the cost:

1. The artist rider says so

If the headliner's technical rider specifies L-Acoustics, you rent L-Acoustics. The rider is a contract. Violating it can mean the artist cancels. End of discussion.

2. The venue requires it

Some venues (mostly higher-end performing arts centers and broadcast facilities) have house line arrays. They will not let you fly another manufacturer's box in their space. Encore handles the rigging. You rent through them or sub-rent.

3. You are doing a long-throw show with critical coverage

For a 5,000-seat outdoor festival, or a 2,000-seat arena with a 200-foot throw distance, the K2's additional headroom and pattern control matter. The cost is justified.

For everything else — corporate events, weddings, galas, awards dinners, mid-size festivals, hotel conferences, indoor shows under 1,000 people — JBL SRX 910LA does the job at half the cost.

How we quote

When you call us for a line array quote, the first question we ask is: “What's the event, the room, and is there a rider?” If there is no rider and the room is a hotel ballroom, conference center, mid-size outdoor stage, or 500-seat theater, we quote SRX 910LA. You get a clean, present, professional sound at the right price.

If there is a rider, or the room is a long-throw situation, or the planner wants the L-Acoustics name in the tech sheet, we quote Kara or K2 and sub-rent it from our network. You get the rider-compliant rig with the same production team and the same project management.

Either way, the gear shows up tested, the crew is on-site, and the show happens.
